As you know, he is a member of The Clarion-Ledger's Dandy Dozen. His life-long dream is to play for Miss State. He is hoping he will be able to improve his pitching enough to sign a scholarship with Miss State once he graduates from Meridian CC. 04/16/98 - The latest word on Meridian CC freshman pitcher Jeff Hunter is Ole Miss is really paying attention to him, or as I was told "hot on his trail." According to my source, Ole Miss will be at Meridian this Sunday checking out Jeff. I've seen this kid play. He has outstanding control with a mid-80's fastball, excellent curve and very good change-up. 04/07/98 - Former New Hope HS pitcher Jeff Hunter, who started for the first time this year, struck out 10 batters in a complete-game victory over Bossier Parrish CC. Jeff has now struck out 22 batters in 26 innings while walking only 2. Source: The Commercial Dispatch (Columbus, MS.) 11/25/98 - First, the MSU football team wins their third straight against the Alabama football team. Now the MSU baseball team is 3 for 3 against Alabama baseball in recruiting with the announced signing of big-time shortstop Matthew Maniscalco (5-10, 180, Oxford (AL) HS). Matthew very strongly considered Alabama, as did previously announced signees Jeff Hunter and Mark Obradovich, but decided to cast his lot with Miss State after a tremendous recruiting battle. Matthew also visited South Alabama and turned down visits to Auburn and North Carolina. Matthew has great speed (6.7 in the 60) and quickness, a very strong arm, and plays great defense. 11/17/98 - The first official MSU baseball signee is Meridian CC (via New Hope HS) pitcher supreme Jeff Hunter. Jeff is a 6-3, 190-lb right handed pitcher who throws CHNKWKS 8јџџџџTEXTTEXTў$FDPPFDPP(FDPCFDPC*FDPCFDPC,STSHSTSH.hSTSHSTSHh/ЂSYIDSYID 2SGP SGP 2INK INK "2BTEPPLC &2BTECPLC >2 FONTFONT^2pSTRSPLC Ю2:PRNTWNPR3'FRAMFRAM/7ˆTITLTITLЗ7DOP DOP Щ703/23/97 - New Hope's Jeff Hunter pitched a perfect game, Saturday, against Caledonia. This guy is so good; great curve, fantastic control and tremendous pitching savvy. For the life of me, I can't understand why he did not receive a D-I offer. 03/20/97 - Here's a bit of info. about Jeff Hunter,a Meridian CC signee from New Hope HS. He doesn't throw extremely hard, 84 MPH, but he has a good curve and changes speeds very well and has baseball smarts. He won his 21st game in a row Tuesday night against Kosciusko. A New Hope friend of mine said he changes speeds with the best of them. As an example, during one of the games against one of the teams they played in Hawaii, he struck out the top hitter on the Islands with a 64 MPH change-up after throwing an 84 MPH fastball. 03/09/97 - How good is the team from New Hope, Mississippi? Well, Thursday night, during their trip to Hawaii, they beat Punahoe, Hawaii's ace and Stanford signee, Justin Wayne, 1-0 on New Hope ace Jeff Hunter's 2-hitter. With this victory, New Hope is now 7-0 on the season and have now won 50 straight games. The national record for consecutive wins is 68. The only RBI of the game was provided by junior Brad Montgomery. This guy is a player to watch. You guys would be surprised at how much talent this New Hope team has. I am proud to say the only team that has come close to beating them is my very own hometown baseball team Caledonia. Game info: The Clarion-Ledger The winning pitcher for New Hope in the first game was The Clarion-Ledger Dandy Dozen pitcher Jeff Hunter, who is 2-0 on the young season. Junior designated hitter Brad Montgomery, a baseball player to watch for next year, had a two-run home run in the third inning. Ole Miss signee Robert Shelton had a double and single 03/02/97 - New Hoin the 85-88 range with pin point control. He was probably the most highly recruiting juco pitcher in the South and was heavily sought after by the likes of Alabama, Ole Miss, Southern Miss and, of course, Miss State. Other schools who were interested but weren't lucky enough to receive a visit from Jeff were Georgia, LSU, Tulane and UNLV. Look for Jeff to be an immediate contributor in 2000. Although, I expect Jeff to be drafted during the MLB Amateur Draft, I fully expect to see him in a Bulldog uniform. One other thing I love about Jeff: He grew up a Bulldog fan and will not only play with his natural ability but with his heart. There's nothing like signing a fellow Bulldog. If any of you have the chance to see Jeff, tell him thanks for signing with our Diamond Dawgs. 11/11/98 - I was told former New Hope HS baseball pitcher Jeff Hunter will officially sign with MSU Thursday. Jeff became an extremely hot prospect this past year and officially visited Ole Miss, Alabama and Southern Miss (all three offered) as well as receiving numerous letters and contact from other baseball powers such as LSU and Georgia just to name a couple. nnings while walking only 2.
